Product details

In 1429, the Duke of Savoy planned to build a wall through the city of Geneva. This was intended to finally resolve his disputes over territorial rights with the local bishop. In the context of the written records of this long-standing conflict, the first cartographic representation of Geneva has been preserved. Based on this map and other examples from the southwest of the empire, the book examines the role that local mappings played in conflict-prone situations. Against the backdrop of recent considerations regarding the political relevance of maps, the study investigates a type of map that has been documented since the early Middle Ages in scholarly contexts and has increasingly become a legally relevant form of record since the 13th century. The four case studies on map usage in the 15th century analyze the production circumstances of maps.
