Product details

The research approach of confessionalization focuses on the correspondences that emerge in the formation and maintenance of the various confessional churches. One of these parallels lies in the disciplining of the church members. Did the confessional churches thus support state formation by promoting the intensification of state power through social discipline? An interesting test case for this well-known thesis is provided by the Three Leagues. In early modern Graubünden, a weakly developed state entity, two confessional groups established themselves - often in an unpeaceful coexistence. It was precisely the weakness of the state that led to a dual confessionalization here, to the (albeit late) formation of solid confessional milieus, and to the (even longer) persistence of confessional forms of faith. In addition to the Three Leagues, their subject territories are also considered.
