Product details

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary, a comprehensive history of the Swiss Professional Association of Nursing Professionals (SBK) is being published for the first time. In the 1890s, the Zurich physician Anna Heer, supported by the Swiss Association of Charitable Women, conceived a nursing school and a nursing organization. Shortly thereafter, the Swiss Red Cross, which had previously focused on the care of the wounded in wartime, also began to address the field of nursing in peacetime. The two protagonists collaborated and founded the Swiss Nursing Association in 1910. In the first decades, the development of the professional association was shaped by the influence of the Red Cross, the medical profession, and the authorities. They shaped the professional image, determined the professional political issues, designed nursing education, and decided on the integration and exclusion of nursing branches. Because this external control prevented membership in the International Council of Nurses (ICN), nurses established the National Association of Sisters of Recognized Nursing Schools in Switzerland in 1936, which was admitted to the ICN a year later. The competition between the two nursing organizations did not last long. In 1944, they merged to form the Swiss Association of Registered Nurses (SVDK). The reunification of the SVDK with the associations of midwifery, infant and child nursing, and psychiatric nursing in 1978 led to the present professional association SBK. The volume illustrates how the SBK has promoted the professionalization of the nursing profession through various conflicts.
