On March 18, 1733, the Lucerne resident Johannes Büelmann had to answer before the Schwyz council. He claimed that the Landammann smelled worse than a poodle, and that the gentlemen had sold their freedom. Joseph Anton Stadler, however, had been executed unjustly; as a result, lilies had grown from his grave, and people would still hold his memory and honor him like the holy Brother Klaus. Stadler had been beheaded in 1708, and his grave became a pilgrimage site for those who believed in ideals fundamentally different from the political practices of the powerful. In popular memory, the executed man was seen as a martyr for freedom, just as Brother Klaus was regarded as a peacemaker and political admonisher. Stadler had indeed initiated fundamental reforms.
