In the mid-1990s, techno became a buzzword and has influenced the public and especially the mass media over the past ten years. The author describes techno in the general context of youth cultures since the 1950s and its development as a music style. In the main part of the work, ravers, DJs, organizers, and scene experts share their insights through detailed interviews. Topics such as raves and their preparation rituals, the design of scene venues, social relationships, self-presentation, clothing, body language, dance, gender roles, eroticism and sexuality, drugs, political views, and the evolution of the Street Parade into a summer festival are addressed. The claim of many ravers that the techno movement is free of rules is contradicted by a noticeable variety of observable rules.
