Hermann Christ (1868-1949) established a hospital in Urfa for the German Orient Mission. Designed as a work of Christian charity, it was intended to serve both Christians and Muslims. It received strong support from Christian and charitable-minded citizens of Basel. The main source of the book consists of unpublished letters from Christ and his wife Berta from the Orient. Around the turn of the 20th century and until the genocide of the Armenians in 1915/16, the provincial town of Urfa was at the center of the Turkish-Armenian confrontation. Against this backdrop, the book describes the medical work of the German Orient Mission, founded by Johannes Lepsius, which Hermann Christ was sent to this remote and impoverished area to assist the persecuted Armenians. As the first European doctor, he had passed the Turkish state exam in Constantinople. Guided by a Protestant spirit.
