Georges Brunschvig reflects like few others the multifaceted identity of being Swiss and Jewish in the 20th century. His life story seamlessly integrates into the history of Switzerland and its Jews since the legal equality established 150 years ago. Growing up in an atmosphere of latent anti-Semitism, Brunschvig developed a strong sense of justice as a teenager and studied law. After the famous Bern trial against the anti-Semitic "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" from 1933 to 1937, the young lawyer and brilliant speaker became a pioneer of today's anti-racism law. During the war and Holocaust years, he faced a test of loyalty between fulfilling his duties as an officer and helping Jewish refugees. Under Brunschvig's presidency from 1946 and alongside the growing enthusiasm for Israel in Switzerland, the situation continued to evolve.
