The author examines the neighborhood not only as a topographical and social space but also as a community of individuals in the city of Zurich in the 15th century. With a solid knowledge of sources, she describes the everyday interactions and communications among neighbors. Through significant examples from Zurich's court records and other source materials, she succeeds in presenting numerous, often overlooked aspects of daily life. The work addresses typical neighborhood conflicts, their development and resolution, as well as the informal and authoritative enforcement of social norms. Additionally, it discusses aspects such as moving behavior, living conditions, self-help, solidarity relationships, social control, and sociability within neighborhoods. In urban historical research, the form of relationships known as neighborhood has been neglected so far. Therefore, this study fills a research gap by exploring the phenomenon of neighborhood in all its nuances for the first time in a late medieval city north of the Alps.
