Product details

Video games have evolved over their more than fifty-year history from skill-based games to narrative simulations. In this process, the recipient actively influences the development of the story. Raffael Schuppisser combines approaches from ludologically oriented game studies with concepts from narrative theory to develop a medium-specific narratology for video games. Here, playing and storytelling are not seen as opposing forces, but rather united through the concept of simulation. Similarly, playing and interpreting are not opposites. Instead, the player is constantly challenged to interpret their actions (narratively), especially when moral decisions must be made. In such moments, the player's values are integrated into the interaction process. Video gaming becomes a complex aesthetic experience.
