Product details

The activities of Swiss companies during World War II, particularly their economic entanglements with the Third Reich, have come to the forefront of interest in recent years. While there is a wealth of literature on the general political, economic, and military conditions of that time, corresponding representations at the company level have been lacking until now. In a comprehensive study, the example of the Schaffhausen industrial group Georg Fischer, one of the leading Swiss foundries at the time, illustrates the war-related situation and the behavior of a company that was significantly involved in export business. Georg Fischer owned, in addition to the plants in Schaffhausen, three foreign subsidiaries: two in Germany and one in England. Thus, the company was represented in the sphere of influence of both warring parties. This circumstance offers, on one hand, the opportunity for meaningful comparisons, while on the other hand, it raises a number of questions - questions about the remaining influence of the parent company on the branches, about the business relationships of the main company with foreign countries in general and with Germany in particular, about the nature and extent of production at the various domestic and foreign facilities, about the political entanglements and the scope of action of key personnel, as well as about the extent and form of forced labor employment. Extensive research in both the individual archives of Georg Fischer AG and in public archives uncovered a wealth of source material, enabling a comprehensive reconstruction of the conditions at that time. The result is a book that, with numerous illustrations, tables, and graphics, makes an important contribution to the scientific exploration of a sensitive area of Swiss economic history.
