Product details

In the year 760, Aimo gifted the monastery of St. Gallen with properties in Elgg and had a document issued that mentions the location in the Eulach Valley for the first time. This seamlessly connects the written record to significant archaeological finds from the Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman period, and early Middle Ages. Around the early medieval church, a small town developed in the Middle Ages with its characteristic structure that still shapes the local landscape today: a square of alleys with rows of houses for craftsmen and small farmers, from which the church and the prominent taverns "Meise" and "Krone" stand out. In 1370, Elgg was granted market rights by the Dukes of Austria, and the following year it received city rights. This laid the foundation for a thriving craft industry that gained considerable recognition for its tin casters, comb makers, and stove builders from the 17th to 19th centuries.
