In a study on the mountains of the world, the French geographer Jules Blache emphasized in 1934 the increasing disparity between lowlands and highlands during modernization. Building on his pioneering research, this publication explores the diverse relationships between mountains and plains. It spans from prehistory to the present in Europe, South America, and Southeast Asia, creating a complex picture of developmental processes. These processes do not always disadvantage mountainous regions and are influenced by many factors.
