Product details

The Dominican convent of Töss experienced a flourishing period in the late Middle Ages. Between 1469 and 1491, the nuns had a new cloister building constructed and shortly thereafter decorated the cloister. On 160 meters of wall space, a multi-figured pictorial world emerged, depicting stories from the Old and New Testament. The cycle of paintings was influenced by Dominican themes but also reflected the community of women living in Töss around 1500, extending far beyond the order's topics: a self-assured convent of sisters from traditional families, who commemorated themselves through the embellishment of the cloister. In the language of images, it documented its religious self-understanding and its connection to the world beyond the monastery walls. The anonymous painters entrusted with the decoration drew from the visual resources of the time: book illustrations and engravings.
