Product details

From September 1939 to May 1945, Swiss book censorship reviewed 5,315 writings, including works by Adolf Hitler, Winston Churchill, and Stalin, as well as texts by Max Frisch, Erich Fromm, and Bertolt Brecht. There were no specific criteria for censorship. The censorship served the purpose of Swiss neutrality policy and was part of the intellectual defense of the country. It aimed to oppose the totalitarian dictatorship in Berlin to protect Switzerland's independence and, consequently, its freedom of expression. In reality, the censors, representing Switzerland as a whole, were caught in a constant conflict of showing opposition to Nazi Germany while simultaneously not denying the cultural roots shared by a significant part of Switzerland. Therefore, the reports from book censorship reflect both strong criticism of the inhumane policies of the Nazi state and approval of actions and behaviors of the northern neighbor. The work of censorship reveals itself as a space for Switzerland's engagement with the surrounding world, particularly with Germany, where it could be tested, discussed, and determined what was acceptable to say and think in Switzerland at that time. The extent to which these boundaries of what could be said were influenced by the cultural proximity to Nazi Germany has only been partially examined, as the myth of resistance has prevented this for decades.
