Since the Zurich City Library merged with the Cantonal Library, Zurich has had a Central Library (ZBZ). This library began operations in a new building in 1917. The book traces the history of the library, which serves both science and the general public, from its beginnings to the present day. It addresses the architectural design and development of the building, the recruitment and training of staff, the challenges of cataloging and computerization, the growth of its numerous collections - the Central Library holds more than just books - and the changes in its governance. It also highlights how significantly libraries are undergoing transformation today and the enormous challenges they face. The texts from the five authors have resulted in a richly illustrated and carefully designed book.
