Switzerland has been distinguished for many years by the quality of its production of topographic and geopolitical maps as well as historical and statistical atlases. A map summarizes complex things, enables the observation of spatial structures and spatial developments. This results in a constant interest of the humanities in developments in cartography. This volume touches on various topics related to cartography in Switzerland, such as the history of the most significant map series, the role of cartographers in locating and visualizing power, and the potential and consequences of digitizing old maps on contemporary historical research and teaching. Methods and tools for the analysis of old maps and possibilities of visualizing historical content with modern cartographic means will be presented.
