Masculinity and nationalism represent characteristics through which a hierarchical difference can be created. By emphasizing belonging to a large group, lower status positions can be compensated for by elevating one's own large group and devaluing out-groups. On the other hand, the emphasis on masculinity allows for the acquisition of social prestige. The author posits that the specific structural conditions of a life situation are expressed through particular performances. This ethnographic study analyzes the self-presentation of right-leaning young adults from a cultural theory perspective and relates it to the structural situation of the respondents. Rituals, symbols, ideologies, and particularly their latent meanings are at the forefront of this analysis. The interviews with ten young adults form the basis of this analysis.
