Product details

For affluent societies, an excess of things and information is typical. Choosing within this diversity presents an everyday challenge and can be understood as a cultural technique. However, in so-called hoarders, signs of being overwhelmed become apparent. The quantity of items and their arrangement in living spaces often lead to restrictions in movement and use, which also affects the time structure of daily life and the social environment. The ethnographic study sheds light on the historical and sociocultural contexts that enable the emergence of the hoarding phenomenon. The main part examines the cultural condition of hoarders: How do those affected navigate societal demands, and how do collective notions of order/disorder, health/illness, and norms influence them?.
