Moving images for a developed world
German, Felix Rauh, 2018Product details
Since the early 1960s, development aid organizations have used documentary films to convince the Swiss population of the necessity and effectiveness of development cooperation through authentic images and sounds from Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Shown in church community centers, at cinema matinees, in school lessons, or on television broadcasts, these images and sounds shaped the audience's perception of the difficult lives in the southern hemisphere. The book traces the production and usage contexts of selected films and analyzes the cinematic representation of developmental differences between the North and South. At the center are the three Bernese filmmakers René Gardi, Ulrich Schweizer, and Peter von Gunten, who produced documentaries about people in the South over several years and personally advocated for their distribution. Their work serves as an exemplary case.
