Product details

The Hössli manuscript speaks with a passionate enthusiasm and the feeling of having rediscovered something that had been buried under the debris of millennia and their superstitions. It contains a wealth of excerpts from classical and Persian literature, which aim to present to the reader—something that is still relevant today—the great lost truth that this is not in the slightest a fantasy, a monstrosity, or a rare exception, but a universally human matter. The Glarus milliner and autodidact Heinrich Hössli (1784-1864) was one of the first authors to justify love between men. The first volume of his "Eros" was published in 1836 in Glarus and was immediately banned by the local authorities, while the second volume appeared in 1838 in St. Gallen. On the occasion of his 150th death anniversary, the Heinrich Hössli Foundation pays tribute to its namesake with a concise collection of studies. Six experts from various disciplines examine the work of the once-ridiculed Glarus philosopher from historical and literary perspectives.
