Product details

The women's monastery of St. Andreas in Engelberg has long been overshadowed by the men's monastery in historical research, even up to recent times. The credit for rediscovering the convent of St. Andreas for contemporary research goes to Elsanne Gilomen-Schenkel. In her work for the Benedictine volume of "Helvetia sacra," she has identified over 500 names of medieval sisters from necrological sources. She defines the relationship between the surprisingly large women's convent and the much smaller men's convent according to the model of double monasteries, which assigns the abbot sole responsibility for all matters concerning the female community. The present studies aim to present the history of the Engelberg women's convent from a new perspective based on the source material. As a result, St. Andreas proves to be in contradiction to previous notions.
