Product details

In Engi/Glarus, slate was mined underground for several hundred years. This industry reached its peak in the 19th century. However, the declining economic significance of slate in the 20th century led to the closure of the mine in 1961, and the slate industry nearly fell into oblivion. Interest in its history began to form during the efforts to develop tourism in the Plattenberg in the 1990s. This work presents a cultural studies perspective on the Engi slate industry within the framework of an oral history project. Based on interviews with contemporaries, it provides a multifaceted picture of the lives and working conditions of slate industry workers and their families in the last operational decades of the mine. This is primarily done from the perspective of the interviewees.
