Product details

The Glacier Garden in Lucerne is one of the most curious museums in Switzerland. In addition to geological evidence from the Ice Age and the Miocene, it features rock collections, skeletons of cave bears and dinosaurs, old furniture and tools, terrain models, and much more, including the famous mirror maze, which has been there since 1899. The Glacier Garden was opened in 1873 by Josef Amrein-Troller, who discovered remnants of the Ice Age while building his wine cellar next to the Lion Monument: glacial pots and glacial striations. He decided to abandon his wine trading plans, preserve the finds, and present them to the public. Around the excavations, he created a park landscape with numerous attractions, a mountain hut, a small chapel, and a lookout tower offering views of the famous panorama between Rigi and Pilatus, as well as a residential house with a museum. While the Glacier Garden benefited from the tourism boom until World War I, it later required periodic new attractions to retain visitors, and it had to adapt to changing travel habits and audience needs. The book describes the changes in the museum's organizational structure as well as its thematic direction, situating them within political, social, and cultural developments. Numerous illustrations depict the eventful history of the Glacier Garden.
