Product details

The spirit of change in the 1960s and 1970s also paved the way in German-speaking children's literature for new literary forms and demands, as well as for new ideological constraints. Anna Katharina Ulrich, one of the most versatile and knowledgeable experts in children's literature in Switzerland, has accompanied this awakening and the subsequent development of children's literature from the very beginning as a critic and editor. Her contributions in the NZZ and in academic journals provide diverse access to modern and classic texts for children and explore the developments in the history of childhood shaped by literacy. A. K. Ulrich's assessment of anti-authoritarian children's literature impresses even after thirty years with its insight, and her psychoanalytic perspective on childhood as a historical, but above all (linguistic) psychological phenomenon reveals how much hidden and unexamined material suddenly comes to light when viewed from a 'foreign'/new perspective. Schrift-Kindheiten gathers the most important essays by Anna Katharina Ulrich since 1970. Topics include new trends in children's literature since 1968, representations of childhood in classics, the significance of dialect in contemporary Swiss children's poetry, reading and intercultural education, and fathers and mothers in children's books. The 'literature at the cat's table' receives recognition in these essays that resonates beyond specialists and inspires a love for reading.
