Product details

Since 1970, the balls of the Swiss lottery have been rolling. Numerous lottery millionaires have already been crowned, but for the majority of participants, hitting the jackpot remains a mere dream. Behind the public facade of the televised drawing of winning numbers lies the hidden longing of the hundreds of thousands of lottery players in Switzerland. This ethnographic study explores how people live with the randomness of lottery luck. It addresses the historical origins, institutional structures, and current form of the lottery, as well as its significance for the players. What place does it occupy in their daily lives, what notions of money, luck, and chance are associated with it, and what are the dreams of a massive win? Numerous conversation documents provide insights into individual playing practices and perspectives.
