The American Promise
German, 2016Product details
With the entry of the Americans into the war in the spring of 1917, World War I took a decisive turn: the balance of power shifted westward, and the German Empire lost the great war. Switzerland was directly affected by this development. For the first time in its history, it had to adjust to a non-European power. However, the small state quickly learned: it turned away from the once-admired Empire and sought to align itself with the USA as the upcoming superpower of the 20th century. The book narrates the tense history of the last two years of the war, during which Switzerland found itself caught between the fronts of the world powers. In the struggle for global dominance, the small state faced severe difficulties. Cut off from vital food imports due to the ruthless German U-boat warfare, it turned to the USA as its savior.
