Product details

Jodok Oesenbry, the author of the bird hunting book, studied theology under the Zurich Reformer Heinrich Bullinger. At the end of 1565, he was elected as a pastor to the church in Thalwil. The inspiration for his work, which can be seen as a supplement to Conrad Gessner's "Historia animalium," came from Hans Wilpert Zoller, the chief magistrate of Horgen, and Christoph Silberysen, the abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Wettingen. Oesenbry was particularly interested in hunting, especially the techniques of bird catching. He relied on Conrad Gessner for literature, sources, and bird descriptions, and like his role model, he placed great importance on illustrations. The critical edition of the bird hunting book, complete with commentary, was prepared by the archivist and cultural historian Christoph Gasser. The illustrations, presented in full-page format, impress with their detail and vibrant colors. Additional contributions address not only the manuscript, the ornate binding, and bibliographical aspects, but also the handover of the completed work to the abbot of Wettingen by the author and scribe. Contributions by Christoph Eggenberger, Christoph Gasser, Peter Lüps, Peter Niederhäuser, Regula Schmid, Marlis Stähli.
