ETH Zurich does not publish a traditional commemorative publication for its anniversary. Instead, historians David Gugerli, Patrick Kupper, and Daniel Speich have written a problem-oriented study that incorporates the latest approaches in the history of science. Under the guiding question of how the institution of ETH has envisioned the future and generated future perspectives in different historical contexts, the remarkable continuity of one of the world's leading universities is reconstructed. Special attention is given to the national and international networks of business, politics, and science, around which the school continually reinvented itself. Through a transition between longer periods of relative stability and shorter phases of fundamental crisis, a text emerges that tells the institutional history of science through the example of ETH.
