Who doesn't remember the medical check-ups at school, the vision and hearing tests, or the somewhat embarrassing glance into one's underwear? This book explores the origins of what has now become a standard practice in school health services and shows how the school health service in the city of Zurich came into being. The history of school doctors exemplifies the increasing scientific approach of municipal administration towards the end of the 19th century. At the same time, it tells the story of the production of healthy bodies through educational, welfare, and medical institutions. The original goal of school hygiene and medical interventions was to eliminate health risks that children faced due to years of attending school. Initially, structural measures like installing school showers brought this goal closer, but soon the focus of doctors and hygienists shifted from the school building to the students themselves. During entrance examinations, the school doctor played a significant role in deciding who should transition to a special class or a home. He sent frail children for recuperation to the Schwäbrig or gained insight into the living conditions of his clientele through home visits. Thus, school hygiene evolved in medical practice into student hygiene, becoming a normalizing authority that focused not only on the bodies of schoolchildren but also on their intellectual abilities and social circumstances.
