The Morality of the World Mirror (referred to as The World Mirror) was publicly performed in 1550 by citizens of Basel. Its author, Valentin Boltz, also directed the play. The city authorities had explicitly instructed their hospital chaplain to write a new piece for the betterment of the citizens and the strengthening of the confederation. The successful performance of his play about Paul from 1546 was still fresh in everyone's memory. The play was printed in two editions in 1550 and 1551 by Jacob Kündig in Basel, featuring numerous woodcuts and decorative borders included in the edition. All copies of the first edition are now lost, and only two copies of the second edition remain - one slightly damaged in the University Library of Basel and another from Prussian Cultural Heritage in Berlin located in Krakow.
