The misery in the immigrant neighborhoods of Paris awakened the compassion of many people in Europe in 1933. To help the children in need, the Swiss Aid Organization for Immigrant Children was founded in Zurich through private initiative. The aim was to strengthen the children through recreational holidays in Switzerland and to alleviate their plight with donations. In the aftermath of the Reichskristallnacht, the organization increasingly focused on providing assistance within the country's borders. Thus, a spontaneous expression of compassion evolved into an important children's aid organization in Switzerland during World War II. The author examines the establishment, structure, and development of the Swiss Aid Organization for Immigrant Children (SHEK), led by Nettie Sutro, from its founding in 1933 until its dissolution in 1947. The study highlights the organization's unique features, including its politically and religiously neutral orientation and strong personal connections.
