During the German air raids on England, the Churchill tank replaced its predecessor, the Matilda II, starting in 1941. However, it was not based on a modern tank concept, which led to ongoing issues with the engine, transmission, and running gear, detracting from its popularity among the troops. Nevertheless, thanks to continuous improvements and modifications, the Churchill managed to hold its ground and was only retired in 1952.
