Product details

We have received the package. Now we can smoke away again and really burn one for the Russians. Such slogans from the field already hint at the everyday significance that smoking had during the First World War. Unlike today, a hundred years ago, cigarettes had no acceptance issues: they were a new, emerging branded product and represented modernity itself. By the turn of the century, they had become socially acceptable, soon affordable for broad circles thanks to machine production, and their variety was breathtaking: around 1910, there were almost 8,000 types in the German Empire. Advertisements and packaging evoked the myths of the Orient and the world of international high society, sometimes featuring excellent graphic design. Time and again, they also conveyed political messages.
