Unfortunately, the librarian Aelius Cessator must forgo the joys of the Saturnalia festival in Roman Cologne. A dead body is found in the basement of the Praetorium, and he is the one who is supposed to find the murderer. With irony and a light touch, Rademacher depicts the lifelike characters of the novel in their historical setting, where the perpetrator ultimately meets his deserved fate.
