The concept of free will is heavily debated in theology and philosophy. Recently, neuroscience has called into question the existence of free will. This raises discomfort and leads to many questions. Can we only understand ourselves as will-less machines? Is it still possible to hold people accountable for their actions and to inquire about personal guilt? What is the purpose of morality and ethics if humans are not free? Are theology and the church not called upon to defend free will in the interest of human dignity?
