Abstract: There are many biographies about the woman who shaped 20th-century fashion like no other, but most should be taken with caution. For Mademoiselle, as she preferred to be called, was not only a brilliant stylist but also a gifted storyteller. The older she became and the further she distanced herself from her beginnings, the more she tended to create personal legends. Chanel erased her two brothers from her biography, whom she even paid for their silence. She denied her first lover, who had opened the doors to higher social circles for her. She altered the story of her birth and childhood.
