From Kafka's peculiar habit of keeping diaries—mixing autobiographical and literary texts—it becomes clear how strongly his respective life situation influenced the creation of his literary work; they provide an unmediated glimpse into his workshop. "I will not leave the diary anymore. Here I will hold on..." he notes on December 16, 1910. In addition to these diary entries, Kafka also recorded his impressions during four trips from 1911 to 1913. These are found in separate notebooks and notepads, which complement the 12 preserved diary notebooks and two remaining bundles (presumably from another notebook). This text edition is based on the Critical Kafka Edition, meaning that the entries are reproduced according to the notebooks rather than in chronological order.
