The ninth and final volume of Peter Härtling's collected works contains his stories, a selection of essays and articles, as well as the two major lectures on poetics that Härtling delivered in Frankfurt and Salzburg. The stories, small masterpieces, often stand in close proximity to the novels; they are preliminary works or studies, but also entirely self-contained creations like "An Evening, a Night, a Morning." The articles and essays reflect the life of an indefatigable, restless, indeed titanic reader and explorer that Härtling has always been—a reader who knows the entire history of literature in great depth and is able to convey it. Additionally, the volume includes the most important programmatic writings in which Härtling outlines his perspective on the writer's work of remembrance.
