Lichtenberg was convinced that only those lectures that included experimental physics should be considered valid, as they not only relied on experience but also demonstrated the experiments. He himself estimated the number of experiments shown during the winter semester to be 600. The course gained such popularity that about a third of all students in Göttingen attended Lichtenberg's experimental physics lectures during their studies. The material basis for this, his collection of physical devices, had been systematically built up from his own resources since the beginning of his lecturing activities. The editors of the volume provide a comprehensive picture of the collection. Lichtenberg himself had created a catalog of a complete set of physical instruments for a lecture on natural philosophy. The individual items in this catalog are edited, explained, and annotated.
