Nativity scenes proclaim the Christian message of the incarnation of Jesus. Multi-figure, simultaneously or sequentially arranged tableaux depict the biblical events from the Annunciation to Mary, the search for lodging, the birth of Christ, the adoration of the newborn by the shepherds, and his veneration by the wise men from the East, to the flight into Egypt and the presentation of Jesus in the temple (known as the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord). However, the nativity scene is also associated with educational customs and rituals for preparing children for Christmas, which have long disappeared and are now experiencing a revival in a new form. This includes, for example, the practice of laying straw ("filling the manger").
