In contrast to art, kitsch is considered intrusive and lacking in reflection. But is this opposition not overly simplistic? Could there not be numerous intermediate levels of reflexivity? Thomas Küpper explores these questions and discusses various positions from literature, philosophy, film, and television, from Walter Benjamin to André Rieu. He demonstrates that kitsch requires certain forms of reflexivity in order to offer the audience intact worlds, strong emotions, and small escapes: much like the fictional pact in the sense of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the audience enters into a pact with kitsch.
