The morphological differences of the oral cavity in reptiles have been suggested by researchers on several occasions and have been partially described in specific cases, but to my knowledge, a coherent and comprehensive treatment of this subject does not yet exist. Therefore, it would be a contribution to expanding our knowledge, even if only regarding the oral cavity formation of Lacertilia, especially since the development of a true palate, which began with turtles but reached its highest perfection in crocodiles, raises the following questions: a) Do we find forms among today's lizards that can be arranged in an ascending series regarding a gradually progressing perfection of their oral cavity structure? b) Are we able to identify precursors to palate formation in the uppermost members of this series?.
