Psychoanalysis and jazz both emerged at the beginning of the 20th century. In addition to the temporal parallel development of both movements, further correspondences can be observed: In therapy, free association is utilized, while in jazz, musical possibilities unfold precisely through improvisation – both benefit from creative freedom within clear structures. In both psychoanalysis and music, a controlled loss of control is not only possible but even desirable, in order to explore spaces, deepen the relationship between the conscious and the unconscious, and develop new ideas.
