For many German and foreign writers, S. Fischer (born 1859) soon became one of the most sought-after publishers in Germany after founding his company in 1886. The correspondences collected here with 42 authors span from 1888 until his death in 1934. In their interplay, the letters between the publisher and the authors document an important piece of literary history. They testify to the kind of business, personal, and intellectual relationships that were possible until the onset of the Nazi dictatorship. Along with a precise commentary, the letters—most of which are published here for the first time—offer often entertaining and frequently thrilling reading.
