From 1904 to 1914, the painter Hans Hofmann (1880-1966), who had friendships with Picasso, Braque, Matisse, the Fauves, and Robert and Sonia Delaunay, became a witness to the new art in the European cultural metropolis of Paris, which he carried with him. In 1915, he founded an art school in Munich, becoming a mediator of French modernism and an internationally renowned art teacher. In 1932, he emigrated to the USA, where he opened the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts in New York two years later. He influenced a new generation of American artists, including figures like Jackson Pollock, Helen Frankenthaler, and Barnett Newman.
