Aarau, Geneva, and Lucerne - in these three Swiss cities, a remarkable dynamism developed within their respective art scenes during the 1970s. Curators like Jean-Christophe Ammann at the Kunstmuseum Lucerne, the establishment of new exhibition spaces such as the Centre d'Art Contemporain in Geneva in 1974, and the Ziegelrain artist community in Aarau transformed these cities into places where advanced contemporary art was created, exhibited, and discussed. Additionally, there was an intense and productive exchange between local and international positions, leading to the gradual dissolution of the Swiss 'narrowness' in people's minds. This book explores the origins of these developments. The editors, Dora Imhof and Sibylle Omlin, identify various reasons for these three focal points in Swiss cultural life, alongside literature and archival sources.
