Jean-Claude Juncker is one of the most experienced statesmen in Europe. As the long-serving Prime Minister of Luxembourg and, most recently, the longest-serving head of government in the EU, he is deeply committed to a social Europe. For many years, this Christian Democrat, who served as Prime Minister of his country from 1995 to 2013, has shaped and influenced European decision-making processes. His candidacy in the European elections in May 2014 for the highest office in the EU, the President of the European Commission, is a logical consequence of his previous work: In the 1980s and 1990s, he provided important impulses for the Economic and Monetary Union as Finance Minister, played a significant role in the Maastricht Treaty in 1992, and from 2005 to 2013, he was the Chairman of the Eurogroup, contributing significantly to overcoming the economic and financial crisis.
