Product details

In the last two decades, there has been much discussion in the German-speaking part of Switzerland about immigrants from the post-Yugoslav region, particularly from Serbia. In the media, politics, and at social gatherings, there has been talk of aggressive and criminal "Yugos," "Balkan racers," and Serbian war criminals. Through five biographical case studies, the author examines how individuals with a Serbian migration background navigate the prevailing societal discourses about ethnic Serbs in their life stories and what impact this has on their sense of belonging to both their country of origin and the host country. Not only does the relationship between discourse and biography represent an important aspect, but also the transnational connections of the respondents. In addition to the five case studies based on narrative interviews, the analysis of the evolving discourse on immigrants from the (post)Yugoslav region since the 1960s forms the core of this work. Furthermore, it addresses broader questions and the accompanying implications for integration policy.
