Inge Sargent believes she has stepped into a fairy tale when she arrives in the port of Rangoon in 1953 with her Burmese husband and is welcomed with royal honors. It is only now that the young Austrian woman learns that her husband, Sao Kya Seng, whom she met as a student in the USA, is not only a mining engineer but also a prince of the Burmese mountain state of Hsipaw and the head of the Shan. Inge thus becomes the Mahadevi, the sky princess. Soon, she familiarizes herself with the language and traditions and becomes involved in social projects. In 1962, this progressive fairy tale comes to a tragic end: Sao Kya Seng is abducted and murdered following the military coup; Inge Sargent manages to escape with her two daughters.
