Nâzim Hikmet was born in 1902 in Thessaloniki and grew up in the cosmopolitan atmosphere of Istanbul. Throughout his life, the politically engaged poet remained persecuted in his homeland. He spent sixteen years in prison and lived in exile for twelve years. He died in 1963 in Moscow. His publication ban in Turkey was only lifted in 1965.
